I’d assume they are native names, probably then fed through some fun combination of Arabic, Portuguese, and French? They don’t seem particular more difficult than various native American place names in the US.

Not when each syllable is one vowel and one hard consonant! It’s harder to pronounce Antananarivo wrong than it is to get it right.

Well, they’ve lost about 80% of their primary forests which had lead to dire issues with people receiving clean water. They ’ve also had two plague outbreaks in the last decade.
